He said no!

He's looking much, much better. no more oxygen, and he's got far fewer iv's in his arms. I saw him in the helmet, it is pretty darn cute. Or as cute as anyone can be in this situation. And (drum roll, please) he said "no". It was very garbled and long, but it was the real deal. And, and (another drum roll, please) he wrote! He was wiggling his fingers and we asked if he wanted a pen. He did, we gave him one and he was asking questions about the surgeries. A couple of neurologists came in and he wrote questions to them. It was wonderful. I am just hoping we didn't tell him something that upset him. He wrote the word incontinent. Big word, folks, big word. I know I would've opted for the slang alternative.

That's all I've got tonight. That's a lot.

  3. Jamie and Ken,
    A nice day of progress!!!
One of many sure to come.
Both Jill and I are so excited to hear such news. Every day when I am looking through my typical quirky websites I think of Ken and how he would get a laugh about them. We are thinking of you and Ken and the boys (and his and your family of course) all the time. Beneath Ken's gentle exterior is the heart of a fighter and the brain of a brilliant and determined person. I have a feeling that nothing is going to stop Ken from having happiness, fufillment and enjoying all of the love he has coming his way. YEAH to the both of you!!! Love and hugs -Shane, Jill and Phoebe.

  5. Wow, Jamie, that sure is some great and welcome news! Thanks for elaborating on "he said no!" and for continuing to keep us all apprised of Ken's progress. I'm guessing his language center is okay if he can write "incontinent" --hell, I misspelled it while I was typing just now! I'm with Shane, we're dealing with some pretty big heart here. Our hearts are full. Rest well tonight, more triumphs tomorrow!
    love, Amy

  8. So now that he's more stable, want to think about skin integrity. Air mattress, venodyne boots are probably already on, turning and repositioning, off loading heels and protection on elbows if not on an air mattress. Ask nursing for skin integrity updates. I know this is annoying, and I wouldn't have mentioned this earlier, but hospitals are notorious for forgetting about skin unless prompted. Acute medical issues do not usually include skin. And skin is our first line of defense against many yucky things in the world and hospitals. And forgive my stupidity, but if they haven't started any PT I'm not sure it's too early to at least have passive range of motion exercises. And if they aren't talking to him about routinely making mental efforts to mobilize his left side, they should. A big part of that reconnecting has to do with the mental intention/initiation. And general stimulation of his left side is always good. Or you could just ask to watch PT so they can show you how to help him. I love you, and if this is too much ignore me. Just want to make sure the hospital is being as proactive as they can: sometimes specialty groups forget other aspects of health care that will ultimately have a major impact on a person's overall health.

  16. That is terrific news! I couldn’t stop smiling all morning! Ken has a lot of work ahead of him but the mind has a tremendous ability to heal the body and he has such an advantage of having you and the boys as motivators. I have been so impressed by your strength, love and compassion. I hope you feel good enough to throw the popcorn away soon!

  22. Keep it coming, J, if it's not too much, as we love the updates. Amy had Ed drop that book off at my house for you. I should have sent it with your mom today as you'll probably see her before I see you. The boys were great. I asked Wyatt about school and his favorite part of school, apparently, is recess. Cool. For some that's the worst part, so I'm glad to see Mr. Social is finding his way at school. I was asking if he played with the same kid or kids or a bunch of different kids and he said different kids (I was actually fishing to see if he already had a girl, guess not, so you're still safe there). And all the kids were playing very nicely, taking turns throwing themselves onto couch pillows from the soft climbers. Wyatt was very patient when the littler boys forgot whose turn was next, and when I said as much he said, "Oh, I can be very patient if I don't have to wait too long." Yeah, me too, Wy. They seem great. Thought you'd want to know. And I heard Gus laugh in a way I'd never heard him laugh before. Very cute. Love to you and Ken and Michael and Sarah. Tess.
